A boy turns 2 and an embryo becomes a fetus

We celebrated our son's 2nd birthday this weekend with a Halloween costume party. Brae was Charlie Brown. Saturday, a bunch of toddlers and youngsters gathered at a warehouse full of inflatable jumping toys and had a ball! We were so blessed in that my sister and sister-in-law (and nephew!) each drove 3 hours to join the festivities, only to turn right around to drive back home (thank you girls!). And Brae was surrounded by lots of family and friends who love him.

Then Sunday, his actual birthday, we spent the day lounging around and I put together all of his toys (why are they so difficult to assemble?). It is such a blessing to have him in our lives. He's now counting to ten (in Spanish and English), and he can sing his ABC's with you. We've started working on identifying letters. He is OBSESSED with "b-ball", aka basketball. Seriously, you've never seen a boy more taken with an orange ball and a basket. This obsession is now about 2 months old, and I don't see it waning.

He is now sleeping in his big boy bed (until he falls out of it, which so far, has just happened once). And he is still using a binky (I know, bad mommy). I figure he'll get rid of it one day -- I mean, he's not going to be in kindergarten with a binky.... is he? It hasn't slowed down his chatter, and it seems to provide him some comfort, so what the heck. And yes, he may end up sucking his thumb, and if he does, he'll be just like his mommy. (if it sounds like I'm trying to justify using the binky when I know I shouldn't, you are exactly right).

And then shifting to Brae's sibling. Today was our 9 week ultrasound. This is when the embryo officially becomes a fetus. The ultrasound was the best so far (thank you Jesus!). The dr. said the baby was "giganormous," even though he/she is measuring 8 weeks, 6 days (plus or minus 1 day), which is just right. We got to hear the heartbeat and it was 174 (another miracle). We even got to see him/her kick a leg! All in all, a miracle in the making. And none of it has anything to do with me.

I'm generally in line with the camp of ladies who have the all-day sickness. (Please don't think I'm complaining -- I see each and every symptom as a reminder of a miracle, for which I am deeply grateful). I've thrown up once, and dry heave most every morning. Steadily, as the day wears on, I get a little less nauseous, as long as I'm eating small meals. Then, in the evening, the nausea creeps up again. It feels like really bad car sickness. That's my strongest symptom right now. The fatigue doesn't bother me as much as my stomach does. I get up about 5 times each night to go to the bathroom, and am not sleeping well because of the nausea. My boob.ies are sore and have this highway of blueish veins circulating around under the skin (sorry if TMI, but this is just fascinating to me). I've had to start unbuttoning some of my jeans, mostly because of the bloating. Next up is a visit with my "regular" Ob/gyn next Thursday.

Thank you so much to each of you who has steadily walked this journey with me. Your love, support, and prayers mean more than you can possibly know.

xoxo

  2. No sweat on the binkie, mommy! :) I still don't understand why so many make an issue of it. If it is orthodontic, and doesn't effect their teeth, than what's the big deal? All 3 of my children found great comfort in them and each gave them up with just a little encouragement right after turning 3. We did move towards only having them in the car and when going to sleep to help with the mumbled speech frustration. But, otherwise, they are completely harmless. We all have to pick our battles as parents, and that one just seems so senseless. Anyway, so happy for your amazing journey...can't wait to watch it all unfold.

  3. I don't take your symptoms as complaining. Heck, I felt extremely blessed to be pregnant after our first IVF cycle and I was throwing up multiple times a day and trying to sleep through my pregnancy. I will admit, I complained, but I was still eternally grateful, but just feeling so darn miserable. I hope to be just as sick if our next IVF cycle is a success, and I know you read my blog, so I will promise to try NOT to complain, but I will tell you that I probably will. It's ok, it means symptoms of a sticky little being, and I'd rather have the symptoms than nothing! Happy Birthday to Brae! What was he for Halloween?

  5. So happy that baby is growing so well! I did not realize our kids were so close in age. My younger daughter will be 2 on Friday. She still uses her binky when she is sleeping and when she can sneak it out of her crib. I will soon try what I did with my older daughter. We "broke" them by cutting a tiny slit out of the top. She did not want it anymore. There were tears the first night, but then no looking back. I am not as confident it will go so well this time as my younger is much more head strong.

  7. Happy 2nd b-day big guy! Don't sweat the binkie thing. My just turned 3yo still has it, but only at bedtime and ONLY in her bed. I was about to take it away MONTHS ago, but there was one stressful situation after another in our house. Now, I am waiting until after the FET trip & Christmas before I remove it from her life for good.

I am so happy to hear the u/s went well and I know you are not complaining about the m/s, but it is still rough esp. when it is all day. I have been there. When I was PG w/ Pookie, we never thought we could have another baby, so I was where you are...every 'yucky' symptom was a blessing. You are always on my prayer list.

  10. What a wonderful report! God is soooooo good! Happy birthday to Brae. Was thinking of him on Sunday. Two year olds are so much fun! And I'm with everyone else- don't worry about the binky. Gracie turned 29 months today and she still has hers at bed and naptime. I've never had any of my students come to kindergarten with their binkies~not yet anyway!!!!!

  12. I'm so glad that everything is going well! I wouldn't worry too much about the binky--there's plenty of kiddos his age that use them--without harm. I guess we were just lucky that Genna never liked them. There were plenty of days (and nights) when I would beg her to take one, though! :) Genna is 32 months old now and she is still in a crib. She is way too much of a wiggle-worm to stay in a big kid bed. I think we'll wait until she doesn't physically fit in the crib anymore!
